Astrology, or Jyotish Shastra, forms an integral part of the cultural traditions of India. In this two day retreat, we will cover the basic tenets of Astrology, and learn the tools that an astrologer uses for analysing a chart. We will discuss the various elements of astrology - signs, houses, planets, and so on - as well as the philosophy and rationale behind them. In addition, you will gain insight on the responsibilities of an astrologer, and tips for the querent. The workshop will end with an evening of star gazing to identify some of the zodiacal signs and planets. This retreat will provide a foundation for further study, and also give you an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your environment.
The workshop will also involve a study of the basic concepts of Geography and Astronomy that are essential for understanding Astrology. We will learn how the equator, the tilt of the earth, latitude, longitude, right ascension, and the precession of equinoxes deeply influence the manner in which an astrological chart is read. These concepts will later be brought to life during the star gazing session in the evening. In a subsequent workshop, we will study the mathematics behind casting a natal chart, and advanced techniques of analysis and chart delineation.
Vikram will facilitate this workshop. He has studied Vedic Astrology at the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences, and subsequently taught at Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan in Bangalore for 2 years. He has been reading charts and researching the subject over the past 14 years. During the course of the workshop, he will attempt to help participants understand their own birth charts.
